Applications — Street Lighting

City-wide street lighting, supervised in real time.

AutoLog® RTUs control and monitor street-lighting circuits across whole municipalities. Documented energy savings of up to 65 percent versus uncontrolled networks — through scheduling, dimming, individual-lamp supervision and failure alerts that reach maintenance before a citizen reports a dark street.

Street lighting is one of the largest line items on most municipal energy bills, and it runs effectively unsupervised — a typical city only learns a lamp is dead when a citizen calls. AutoLog® RTUs replace that reactive model with a supervised, schedule-driven, demand-responsive network.

A typical AutoLog street-lighting deployment monitors each lighting cabinet for circuit current, voltage, photocell input and fault status, and controls switching and dimming according to schedule, photocell, or external commands from a central SCADA. The GSM-RTU family is the natural fit — every cabinet already has line power and most have GSM coverage; no separate communication infrastructure is required.

Energy savings come from three places: (1) scheduling fits each feeder’s actual evening / morning twilight rather than a single citywide timer, (2) dimming during low-traffic hours typically cuts another 15–30 percent, and (3) early fault detection reduces the maintenance overhead that has to be priced into the operating budget. Real deployments have documented savings of up to 65 percent versus uncontrolled networks.

The SCADA layer — ControlMan™ — provides a city-wide map view of cabinet status, energy consumption history per circuit, and an alarm queue routed to the maintenance crew on duty.
